Social Media Drives Viewing of TV Content

No longer satisfied to watch shows passively, viewers are taking to social networks for recommendations of TV content and to share their own opinions.


According to a poll of TV households by Horowitz Associates, 19% of respondents began watching a TV show after reading about it on a social network or blog. Additionally, 23% had visited a website or used an app that provided more content about a show and 39% had used the Internet to search for more information about something they saw on television.


Viewers are not only availing themselves of new paths to content, they also are watching shows on multiple devices. One-third stream TV shows on alternative platforms at least once a month, with over-the-top devices and PC’s equally popular. A much smaller number of respondents use a tablet or smartphone to watch TV content.
